Why choose the Idea Lab?

We have been here manufacturing in China since 2009. We love it. It is what we do. We breathe it. We love solving problems. We love being involved. Materials, components, fabrics we source everything ourselves.

And finally since early June we have just opened our very own albeit small manufacturing unit here in South China to cater for made to order clothing manufacturers.

What materials do you work with?

Garment production in China entails a whole range of different fabrics. Of course we work with the common ones such as:

1. Cotton Poly Blends

2. Nylon

3. Bamboo

4. Wool (Boiled Wool also)

5. Chenille

6. Chiffon

7. Chino

8. Corduroy

9. Egyptian Cotton

10. Elastane

11. Hydrophilic and hydrophobic (fabrics that absorb and repel water respectively).

12. Jersey

13. Lace

14. Latex

15. Linen

16. Lycra

17. Microfibers.

And the list goes on and on. Basically if you have a particular fabric you are looking for, we can work with it. The china clothing manufacturing industry is very vast and well set up.

What should I think about when choosing fabrics?

Fabrics have a wide range of purposes designed to fulfil different needs. If you know exactly what you want, then of course this is perfect. But it's also about balancing price with quality. Some cheaper fabrics do a similar job and are much easier to work with.

If you are in doubt contact us with your enquiry and we are more than happy to assist with your request to suggest a suitable fabric.

Where do you manufacture your garments?

Most clothing manufacturers are in Guangzhou China, which is where we are based. We have a huge network of fantastic suppliers that we have developed great long lasting relationships with over the many years we have been here.

We have our own small workshop that is growing where we can handle our own production in house for a number of select garments. If you are unsure about where your product should be manufactured and want some advice drop us an email to talk and we will be happy to answer your questions.

How much do

samples cost?

There is a small fee for sampling. It is designed to cover the labour and material cost as well as setting up the pattern. All garment work is done by hand, so at some point once something is made, somebody has to be paid to do the work.

Sampling fees vary depending on the garment, but typically around $120 including express shipping to your door after it is made.

Samples are important because they show the quality of workmanship, as well as the type of materials on offer. We advise customers to never skip the sampling stage and for this we are happy to return all sampling fees against the final order value.

How long does it usually take?

Typically you can expect samples to be finished in 14 working days. Of course sometimes if the sample is a little more complicated or the first run is not exactly right we might need to make another one for you. So timelines are a guidance only.

Sampling is a process that you cannot and should not rush. A good sample paves the way for good manufacturing.

Lead times on garment production in china vary hugely. The biggest component here is the availability of labour. Labour is a resource that is not fixed in terms of output, such as a machine or a tool. Labour has days off, gets sick, goes home, visits family, travels etc. When working with people as the main variable for production lead times need to be a little flexible.

Lead times with made to order clothing manufacturers also vary on quantity. Small quantity manufacturing can be quite short, 15-20 days is typically long enough to get stock finished.

What is your MOQ?

What should be my next step?

The MOQ or Minimum order quantity is a number given by the factory as an indication of the lowest number they are willing to produce per style.

For some more complicated items where we need to work with our network of manufacturers, there may be minimum order quantities, but if you let us know what you quantity you need to be purchasing we can work with that.
